La Fête de la Musique at
the Alliance Française!
(check out the lineup below)
On June 23rd at 1 pm.
Be a part of this 30 year old French tradition.
What is La Fête de la Musique?
When, in October 1981, Maurice Fleuret became Director of Music and Dance at Jack Lang’s request, he applies his reflections to the musical practice and its evolution: « the music everywhere and the concert nowhere« . When he discovered, in a 1982 study on the cultural habits of the French, that five million people, one child out of two, played a musical instrument, he began to dream of a way to bring people out on the streets.
And thus, in a few weeks’ time, the Fête de la Musique was launched on June 21, 1982, the day of summer solstice, a pagan night which recalls the ancient tradition of Saint John’s feasts.
Given the immediate success of this popular and largely spontaneous event, this gathering of professionals and amateurs musicians, with its new focus on all kinds of music, was the incarnation of a policy striving to give an equal place to amateur musicians, to rock, jazz, singing and traditional music, all of which were given a chance to be heard alongside so-called « serious » music.

Hot Steel & Cool Ukulele
Instrumentation: Ukulele
Genre : Hawaiian , Tropical
Hot Steel & Cool Ukulele is a band that loves the sound of the steel guitar and the classic hapa haole songs from 1920 to 1941. Their CD, “Hapa Haole Hit Parade” features four steel guitar virtuosos: Ken Emerson, Sean Allen, Don McClellan, and Brad Bechtel, with Erich Sylvester singing and playing ukulele on 14 tracks of hapa haole classics. Harry has been hosting the Territorial Airwaves show for 33 years, and his father hosted Honolulu radio shows during the pre-war era. Usually Harry plays old recordings from the era before statehood, but he also plays some new recordings like mine if the songs are from that era. In September, They sang a few songs at the annual Hapa Haole Hula & Music Festival, at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki. Their second appearance at the festival, they may sing there again next September.

Harry B. Soria’s “Territorial Airwaves” show features a live interview with Erich Sylvester with seven complete tracks from the CD at: http://www.am940hawaii.com/Player/101207321/
The San Francisco Chronicle web site has a column called Hawaii Insider by Jeanne Cooper. She wrote about the CD and a radio interview I did here in the Bay Area on KCSM, which is “all jazz all the time.” Host Mal Sharpe played several tracks and we talked about the history of the songs and the classic steel guitar bands that made them famous.

Zu Zed
Instrumentation: Guitare, Drum, Synthesized, iPhone, Voices, Lost and Found items.
Genre : Experimental Music, Psychedelic Rock
Hatched in early 2012 inside an egg carton-lined basement in the Mission District, Zu Zed is neighbors John Givens and Laurie Buenafe. We draw ideas and textures from each other as well as what is happening around us.
We're also fond of long hallways, tunnels, alleyways and overpasses where the space is a part of the sound (and more importantly, where listeners are not used to discovering music).

Hélène Renaut
Instrumentation: Guitar, drums, trumpet, French horn, clarinet, upright guitar, clarinet, violin, vocals, glockenspiel
Genre: Pop, Rock, Folk
Hélène Renaut is a singer-songwriter based in San Francisco, California. Her work marries American and British folk influences with a 60s pop sensibility, and has been compared to artists as diverse as Syd Barrett, Françoise Hardy or Vashti Bunyan.
"Hélène Renaut's simple tenderness evokes fellow Frenchwoman Françoise Hardy; her spare approach, Marissa Nadler. Complex acoustic guitar parts are trimmed with playful glockenspiel, trombone, and soft percussion. But what's most charming about the Brittany-born, San Francisco-based singer-songwriter is how she dresses up adult motifs in kid's attire."Bumblebee" finds Renaut grappling with crushing isolation through a blushingly cute chit-chat with a bee. The aching restlessness of "The Deer Convention" is hidden underneath her childlike wonder of golden light. Rather than showing the singer-songwriter circumventing grown-up crises, these songs offer the realization that adolescence can be damn fun, especially set against folk music that simultaneously makes you blush and squirm."

Hot Six is a jazz band based in San Francisco. Our repertoire is based on two of the most important early developments in jazz: the horn-based hot jazz pioneered by Louis Armstrong in America, and the string-based gypsy jazz (often called jazz manouche) invented by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in France. Together since 2009, we have studied with some of the area's most prominent jazz artists, including members of local legends Gaucho and the Hot Club of San Francisco.
